Coronary CT angiography is a dedicated study investigating the arteries that feed the heart muscle. It also gives a detailed functional analysis of the heart. This examination involves an injection of x-ray dye into the veins of the arm, an ECG connected to the chest and a dose of nitrolingual spray under the tongue ( this drug dilates the arteries of the heart for accurate assessment). The CT scanner is utilized to image the heart and to assess the status of coronary artery disease.

The procedure takes only 15 minutes to perform, and post examination, a normal routine may be resumed immediately.

Preparation

The patient will be asked to fast for 4 hours ( some water may be taken). Stimulants, such as caffeine, should be avoided for 24 hours prior to the examination. If diabetic and taking Metformin therapy, the patient will be asked to cease Metformin on the day of the examination, and not to commence Metformin for 48 hours. A blood test showing adequate renal function may be required. Other medication may be taken as per usual, this will not affect the examination.

Results

The examination of the coronary arteries involves a detailed workup of the data obtained from the scan. This can take some time and hence the results will not be available on the day of examination. The results will be available in 48 hours from the scan. Any urgent situations encountered will be reported to your referring doctor, this will be done on the day of examination.
